Four Homeless Men Beaten to Death in NYC's Chinatown

Four homeless men were beaten to death overnight with a metal object in Chinatown, authorities confirmed early Saturday.

A 24-year-old man is in custody in the brutal slayings, they said.

Two victims were found on East Bowery Street around 2 a.m., police said – one dead and one in critical condition.

A short time later three victims, all dead, were found on East Broadway. They all had head trauma from apparently being struck with a metal object of some kind.

Parents Arrested in Death of 4-Year-Old Palmdale Boy, Sources Say

Parents Arrested in Death of 4-Year-Old Palmdale Boy, Sources Say

What to Know

  • Deputies who responded to the family’s home in July were told he had drowned in the apartment complex pool

  • Injuries on Noah’s body prompted an investigation into his death, which investigators called suspicious

  • As the I-Team has documented, DCFS has been part of Noah’s life since he was born

The parents of a 4-year-old Palmdale boy, whose death in July was deemed suspicious by deputies who responded to his family’s home, have been arrested, multiple sources tell NBC4.

The arrest comes more than two months after the parents of Noah Cuatro told Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies that the boy drowned at their apartment complex pool.

“The criminal arrest of Noah Cuatro’s biological parents is an important step forward in this ongoing case. Since the moment I learned of Noah’s tragic death, I committed to hold all negligent parties accountable. I’ve ensured full transparency during this investigation. We’ve highlighted areas to improve and have already implemented meaningful reforms. I’m grateful to the Sheriff’s Department detectives who worked around the clock investigating Noah’s death. I’ll continue to be engaged on this case with the Sheriff and the District Attorney,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said.

Deputies who responded to the home where the boy lived said that injuries on Noah’s body prompted an investigation into his death that they called suspicious. Noah was airlifted to Palmdale Regional Medical Center and then to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he died on July 6.

What led to the boy’s death remains unclear, but deputies said his injuries were not consistent with a drowning. An autopsy is still pending.

Details regarding charges in the case were not immediately available.

His parents were questioned at the time, but not arrested.

A removal order that could have taken the boy out of the home was issued in May, but never executed. The order was submitted to a court and approved by a judge.

The boy died about two months after the order was issued.

As the I-Team has documented, DCFS has been part of Noah’s life since he was born.

Earlier this month, the NBC4 I-Team reported that a new report from the Office of Child Protection outlined a social worker’s concerns. The worker who asked the judge for the removal order told a judge that Noah’s parents were not “compliant” or “truthful.”

A relative of Noah’s mother said the boy’s parents loved him and the children very much, insisting that the family’s home life is not being represented accurately.

NBC4’s Jonathan Lloyd contributed to this report.

Iranian Officials Say 17 Alleged US Spies Captured, Some Sentenced to Death

Iranian Officials Say 17 Alleged US Spies Captured, Some Sentenced to Death

Iranian officials said Monday that 17 people have been captured who were allegedly spies working for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, NBC News reported.

The Iranian Intelligence Ministry held a briefing on Monday where they announced the alleged spies were Iranian citizens but trained by the CIA.

Some of those arrested have been sentenced to death, the Intelligence Ministry said.

U.S. officials have not yet responded to the allegations. The Iranian government occasionally makes similar claims and it was not immediately possible to determine whether they are legitimate. The U.S. government never acknowledges CIA recruitment abroad.

Investigation Launched Into Death of 4-Year-Old Palmdale Boy

Investigation Launched Into Death of 4-Year-Old Palmdale Boy

An investigation was underway Wednesday into the death of a 4-year-old Palmdale boy who was reported to have been injured in a near drowning but had trauma injuries that raised suspicion about how he died.

Authorities were called about 4 p.m. Friday to a home where the boy, identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as Noah Cuatro, lived with his parents and three siblings, according to Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

The boy’s parents reported that the child nearly drowned in the pool at the family’s home in the 1200 block of East Avenue S, sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.

The child was taken first to Palmdale Regional Medical Center and then to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“Once the child was transported to a local hospital, there was some trauma found on the body that was inconsistent with a drowning,” Mendoza said.

The boy was pronounced dead on Saturday morning, but the cause of death was not disclosed.

Noah’s parents were questioned, but not arrested and his siblings were taken into protective custody, Mendoza said.

There were previous reports to the Department of Children and Family Services regarding the boy, but specifics of the reports were not revealed.

“At this point, we’re retrieving the case file as we speak, we’re going to be reviewing that case file and we’ll have more information in the next coming days,” Mendoza said.

A GoFundMe page established to assist the family had raised $1030 toward a $3,000 goal as of Wednesday morning.

4-Year-Old Palmdale Boy’s Death Being Investigated

[LA] 4-Year-Old Palmdale Boy's Death Being Investigated

Noah’s death follows the deaths of two Antelope Valley boys — 10-year- old Anthony Avalos of Lancaster in June 2018 and 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez of Palmdale in May 2013 — who were found to have suffered severe abuse in cases that raised questions about the effectiveness of DFCS personnel and policies.

In June 2018, Fernandez’s mother, Pearl Sinthia Fernandez, 34, was sentenced to life in prison without parole and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, 37, was sentenced to death for the torture killing of Gabriel.

At the time of sentencing, Superior Court Judge George G. Lomeli said the abuse suffered by the boy was “horrendous, inhumane and nothing short of evil.”

In the Avalos case, his mother, Heather Maxine Barron, 29, and her boyfriend, Kareem Ernesto Leiva, 32, pleaded not guilty to killing and torturing the boy before his death.

Prosecutors alleged Barron and Leiva starved and force-fed Avalos, slammed him onto the floor and into furniture, wouldn’t let him go to the bathroom and had his siblings hurt Anthony.

In both cases, the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services received reports about abuse, but chose to leave each boy in the home with his mother and her boyfriend.

The NBC4 I-Team, meanwhile, found that there were no violations at the pool where the family said the boy drowned, the Mountain Shadows Apartments, 1240 Avenue S in Palmdale.

The I-Team also reported on a recent state audit claimed that the DCFS has put children at risk.

Human Trafficking Accusation Added to Wrongful Death Lawsuit Facing Noted Political Activist and Donor

Family Files Lawsuit Against Democratic Donor Ed Buck in Overdose Death

A new legal filing accuses prominent political activist and donor Ed Buck of violating federal human trafficking laws when he allegedly supplied an airline ticket to a man who flew to Los Angeles from Texas and died inside Buck’s West Hollywood apartment.

The legal document, an addition to the wrongful death lawsuit filed earlier this year by the dead man’s mother, says Buck, “knowingly utilized interstate commerce,” for the purpose of moving the man to Southern California, “for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts.”

It also accused Buck of sharing an explicit video recording.

Buck’s attorney Seymour Amster has denied the accusations in the lawsuit and said earlier this year, “we’ll fight the accusations vigorously.”

The lawsuit centers on the June 27, 2017 death of Gemmel Moore inside Buck’s apartment.

The case also accuses the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office of ignoring evidence of criminal wrongdoing when it decided last year not to file criminal charges.

Moore’s mother, LaTisha Nixon, told NBC4 she was frustrated that the DA failed to act, and said she didn’t want to see any other mothers lose their loved ones in a similar way.

“I just think they don’t care,” Nixon said.

The case, filed in LA Superior Court, alleges wrongful death, sexual battery, hate violence, drug dealer liability, negligence, infliction of emotional distress, and two violations of civil rights.

The DA’s Office has declined to comment.

Moore’s death was initially classified as an accidental methamphetamine overdose.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department reexamined the case after Nixon and activists demanded a deeper investigation.

In January 2019, Timothy Dean, 55, died in Buck’s apartment on Laurel Avenue under similar circumstances.

Buck’s attorney has said Dean arrived at the apartment already under the influence of a drug.

Nixon’s attorneys, Nana Gyamfi and Hussain Turk, said they believe Buck has received preferential treatment from police and prosecutors, possibly as a result of his history of political activism and campaign donations to a wide variety of elected officials.

“The lawsuit doesn’t only get some level of accountability from Ed Buck and from the District Attorney’s office, the County — in the language that they understand, which is money, but it also enables us to expose what Ed Buck is doing,” Gyamfi said.
